Euthanasia
We all want to spare an animal a final ordeal of suffering, but the decision about when intervention is needed is always difficult.
An animal cannot say so itself, a veterinarian can only advise, the owner must make the decision himself.
How does it work?
The cat is first put under anaesthesia with an injection. Then a heavy sleeping drug is injected, usually into the abdominal cavity.
The drug takes effect after about 10 minutes and that sleep becomes deeper and deeper until the heart stops. In rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals everything proceeds in the same way as in the cat. For all animals it is pleasant if the owner is present, certainly until the moment they have fallen asleep.
In general, it is not objectionable for children to be present.
On the contrary, often it will also be able to help them in processing the loss if they have the certainty that an animal has fallen asleep peacefully.
After death
After death, animals are collected from the veterinary practice. For pets, cremation is also a possibility.
Deceased animals can then be collected from the clinic by a crematorium, but it is also possible to have an animal collected at home or to bring it to the
crematorium yourself.
In general, after cremation the ashes are scattered over the sea, but you can also scatter the ashes yourself or place them in an urn.
You can discuss these and any other wishes with the crematorium or with the veterinarian.
The costs of cremating your pet can vary and depend, among other things, on the size of the animal. It is also possible to bury a pet, but that must be arranged by the owner himself.
